Tripura land & survey glossary
Plain-language meanings for the words on your Khatian and Mouza map, what each one is, and which of them you actually need before joining your sheets.
12 terms
- Mouzaমৌজা
- The revenue unit Tripura's land records are kept in, the equivalent of a revenue village elsewhere. Every map and record request names the Mouza, and names can repeat across sub-divisions, so take the spelling and the sub-division from the Khatian.
- Mouza mapমৌজা ম্যাপ
- The cadastral map of one Mouza, showing every plot with its Dag number and boundaries. It is drawn across several sheets, so a holding near a sheet edge, or across two Mouzas, needs more than one sheet joined to be seen whole.
- Plot (Dag) numberদাগ নম্বর
- The number that identifies one plot on the Mouza map. It is unique only within its Mouza, so a Dag number always travels with the Mouza name. The Khatian lists the Dag numbers in a holding; the map shows where they are.
- Khatianখতিয়ান
- The record of rights for a holding: the holder's name, the Khatian number, and each Dag number in the holding with its area and classification. It records who holds the land in the revenue record; title comes from the registered deeds behind it.
- Khatian numberখতিয়ান নম্বর
- The number of the holding's account in the Mouza. One Khatian can cover many Dag numbers, and one Dag number can appear in more than one Khatian where it is held in shares. It is the number the record is searched on.
- Jami Tripuraজমি ত্রিপুরা
- The state's online land-records portal, where Khatian and plot information is published by district, sub-division and Mouza. What it shows, and how the search is laid out, changes over time, so check the current screens.
- Mutation
- The change to the Khatian that records a transfer by sale, inheritance, gift or partition. Until it is made, the Khatian still names the previous holder whatever the registered deed says.
- Certified copy
- A copy of a Khatian entry or a map sheet certified by the revenue office. The version you view online is for information; a bank, a registration or a court will usually ask for the certified one.
- Sub-division
- The revenue unit below the district. Tripura's eight districts are divided into sub-divisions, and the Mouzas sit within them. A record search asks for the district and sub-division before the Mouza.
- Sub-Divisional MagistrateSDM
- The officer at the head of a sub-division, responsible for its revenue administration. Land-record questions that the local revenue staff cannot settle usually go to the SDM's office.
- Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District CouncilTTAADC
- The autonomous district council set up under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, covering a large part of the state's area. Whether a plot lies inside its area is one of the first things to establish about land in Tripura.
- Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act
- The state's land law, under which the Khatian is kept and which restricts the transfer of land held by a member of a Scheduled Tribe to anyone who is not. What it permits on a specific plot is a question for the revenue office and an advocate.
