Haryana land & survey glossary
Plain-language meanings for the words on your Jamabandi (Nakal / Fard) and Musavi / Shajra (village map), what each one is, and which of them you actually need before joining your sheets.
12 terms
- Musaviमुसावी
- The scaled field map of a revenue village, drawn across several sheets and showing each Murabba with the Killa numbers inside it. A holding assembled from Killas in different Murabbas is spread across more than one sheet, which is why these are the sheets people need joined.
- Shajra Kishtwarशजरा किश्तवार
- The field map of the village, the same drawing the Musavi carries. The word Shajra on its own is ambiguous at a revenue counter because it is also the first word of the Shajra Nasab, the family pedigree table, so ask for the Kishtwar when you want the map.
- Murabbaमुरब्बा
- The square block the consolidation laid out, containing twenty-five Killas. Haryana holdings are written as a Murabba number followed by a list of Killa numbers, so the Murabba is the unit that tells you which sheet of the Musavi to ask for.
- Killaकिल्ला
- One numbered square inside a Murabba, and the ordinary parcel unit in consolidated Haryana. A Killa is the piece the map is drawn against and the piece a sale is usually written for. Khasra number is the older general term for the same thing and both are still in use.
- Kanal and Marlaकनाल / मरला
- The area units the record uses, with twenty Marla to a Kanal and eight Kanal to an acre. A Jamabandi in Haryana states area in Kanal and Marla rather than in acres or hectares, so an area read off the record needs converting before it is compared to anything in a sale listing.
- Jamabandiजमाबंदी
- The record of rights for a village, revised periodically: the owner, the cultivator, the Killa and Khasra numbers held, and the area in Kanal and Marla. It names the land and says who holds it; the Musavi is what shows where it sits.
- Fardफर्द
- A copy of the Jamabandi for a particular holding, and the document people actually carry to a bank or a registration. A Fard and a Nakal mean the same thing in ordinary use. It is a copy of the record, not a title in itself.
- Tatima Shajraततीमा शजरा
- The sheet drawn when a Killa or Khasra is partitioned, showing the new shares of a parent parcel that the main Musavi still draws as one. A holding divided among heirs usually cannot be understood from the Musavi alone, and the Tatima is the missing piece.
- Intkaalइंतकाल
- Mutation: the entry that records a transfer by sale, inheritance or partition against the holding. Until it is sanctioned the Jamabandi still shows the previous owner, so a registered sale deed and an updated Fard are two separate things.
- Chakbandiचकबंदी
- Consolidation: the reorganisation that replaced scattered strips with the Murabba and Killa grid, giving each holder fewer and larger blocks. It is why most Haryana land is described by Killa rather than by old Khasra numbers, and why pre-consolidation deeds can be hard to place on the current map.
- Girdawariगिरदावरी
- The seasonal crop inspection the Patwari records against each Killa: what was sown and whether the land was irrigated. It is the entry a crop-loss or compensation claim is decided on, and it is separate from the ownership entry in the Jamabandi.
- Patwariपटवारी
- The village revenue officer who maintains the Jamabandi and the Girdawari for a circle, prepares mutation entries and holds the working copy of the Musavi. A Tatima after a partition is prepared here before it reaches the tehsil.
