Assam land & survey glossary

Plain-language meanings for the words on your Chitha / Jamabandi and Mouza map, what each one is, and which of them you actually need before joining your sheets.

12 terms
Dag numberদাগ নম্বৰ
The plot number in an Assam revenue village, the equivalent of a survey number elsewhere. Land is identified by its Dag within a Mouza, and each Dag appears on the Mouza map with its boundaries.
Pattaপট্টা
The record of the right to hold land, issued against one or more Dags. Assam distinguishes several kinds, of which the periodic (Myadi) patta is the ordinary heritable and transferable one.
Myadi Patta
A periodic patta: a heritable, transferable holding, renewable at the end of its term. This is what most settled agricultural land is held under, and what a buyer expects to see.
Eksana Patta
An annual patta: a one-year settlement that is not heritable or transferable in the way a Myadi patta is. Land held this way is treated very differently in a transaction, which is why the patta type is checked before anything else.
Chithaচিতা
The field register kept by the village revenue staff, recording each Dag with its area, classification and the current occupant. The ground-level detail behind the Jamabandi.
Jamabandiজমাবন্দী
The record of rights for a village, listing holders, their Dags and the revenue assessed. Together with the Chitha it is what a holding is verified against.
Mouzaমৌজা
The revenue unit a group of villages sits in: Assam's equivalent of the village-level revenue circle elsewhere, and the unit land records are organised by. A Mouza map covers the whole Mouza, usually across several sheets.
Mouzadar
The officer responsible for revenue collection and records within a Mouza in the areas where the office exists. The first point of contact for records at that level.
Lat Mandal
The village-level revenue official who maintains the Chitha and reports changes on the ground: Assam's counterpart to the Patwari or Talathi.
Circle Officer
The revenue officer in charge of a Revenue Circle, the sub-division between district and Mouza. Mutations, certified copies and most record corrections are handled at the Circle Office.
Dharitreeধৰিত্ৰী
The state's land-records system, part of the Integrated Land Records Management System, through which Jamabandi copies and record details are issued.
Mouza mapমৌজা মেপ
The cadastral map of a Mouza showing every Dag with its boundaries. A Mouza is normally issued as several adjacent sheets, so seeing a holding whole, or one that crosses into the next Mouza, means joining sheets together.
