Manipur land & survey glossary
Plain-language meanings for the words on your Jamabandi / Patta and cadastral map, what each one is, and which of them you actually need before joining your sheets.
12 terms
- Cadastral map
- The survey map of a valley village, showing every plot with its Dag number and boundaries. It is drawn across several sheets, so a holding near a sheet edge needs more than one sheet joined to be seen whole. Most hill villages have no cadastral map.
- Dag number
- The number that identifies one plot on a valley village's cadastral map. It is unique only within its village, so it always travels with the village name.
- Patta number
- The number of a holding's account in a surveyed village. One Patta can cover many Dag numbers, and it is the number the record of that holding is kept under.
- Patta
- The record of a holding in a surveyed village: the holder, the Patta number, and the Dag numbers it covers with their area. It records who holds the land in the revenue record; title comes from the registered deeds behind it.
- Jamabandi
- The register of holdings for a surveyed village, listing each Patta with its holders, Dag numbers and area. A mutation changes it, so it is where to check that a transfer has been entered.
- Louchapathap
- Manipur's online land-records portal, where digitised records for surveyed villages are published. It covers the valley's revenue record; hill land under customary tenure is largely outside it. Check the current screens for what it shows.
- Mutation
- The change to the Jamabandi and Patta that records a transfer by sale, inheritance, gift or partition. Until it is made, the record still names the previous holder whatever the registered deed says.
- Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act
- The state's land law for surveyed areas, under which the Patta and Jamabandi are kept. It applies to the valley; most hill land is held under customary tenure outside its revenue record.
- Customary tenure (hill areas)
- How most land in Manipur's hill districts is held: under the customs of the village and its people, through the village chief or village authority, rather than by a Patta in a revenue record. There is usually no cadastral map, so any drawing is a survey sketch.
- Village chief / village authority
- The customary head or body of a hill village, through whom land in the village is held and allotted under its own customs. A certificate from the chief or the village authority is usually how a hill holding is evidenced.
- Sub-Deputy CollectorSDC
- The revenue officer for a circle in the valley districts, and the usual office for Patta, Jamabandi and mutation questions below the sub-division.
- Deputy CommissionerDC
- The head of a district's administration, including its revenue office. In the hill districts it is the office to ask what land record, if any, exists for a village.
