Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu land & survey glossary

Plain-language meanings for the words on your 7/12 utara and village map / Block map, what each one is, and which of them you actually need before joining your sheets.

Village map
The map of a whole village, showing every survey number with its neighbours, roads and water bodies. It is drawn across several sheets, so a holding near a sheet edge, or across several survey numbers, usually needs more than one sheet joined.
Survey number
The number that identifies a parcel within a village. The record of rights, the village map and any mutation are keyed on it. Survey numbers restart in each village, so always give the village name with the number.
Subdivision number
The part that follows the survey number when a parcel has been divided by sale, partition or inheritance, identifying one share of it. Copy it exactly from the record of rights for any map request.
7/12 extract7/12
The extract of the record of rights issued in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, named after the two forms it combines. It gives the holder, the area and the land's use for a survey number. It says who holds the land in the revenue record; it does not draw it.
Record of rights
The revenue record of who holds each survey number, with its area and use. Its printed format differs between districts here: Dadra and Nagar Haveli issues the 7/12, while Daman and Diu, administered with Goa until 1987, can follow a different pattern. Ask the Mamlatdar's office which form applies to your village.
Mutation entry
The entry that records a change of holder after a sale, inheritance, gift or partition. Until it is certified, the record of rights still names the previous holder, whatever the deed says.
Portuguese-era records
Land references from before the current survey. Dadra and Nagar Haveli was Portuguese territory until 1954 and Daman and Diu until 1961, so older deeds can describe land by entries in Portuguese registers rather than by a current survey number. Tracing them to today's numbers is a question for the Mamlatdar's office and an advocate.
Tribal land
Land held by members of Scheduled Tribes. In Dadra and Nagar Haveli its transfer is restricted, and much of the district's land has been held by tribal families. What is permitted on a specific survey number is a question for the Mamlatdar's office and an advocate.
Government land
Land recorded in the government's name rather than in a private holder's. It cannot be sold as a private holding, so a record of rights showing government land against a survey number a seller is offering needs an explanation before anything else.
Mamlatdar
The head of a taluka's revenue office. Each of the three districts has its own Mamlatdar's office, which keeps the record of rights, handles mutations and issues certified copies.
Talathi
The village-level revenue official who keeps the village's land records and is usually the first person to ask about an entry against a survey number.
Collector
The head of revenue administration for a district, above the Mamlatdar. Questions that go beyond the taluka office are taken up at the Collector's office.
